One Month to CAT: What we did [ Part II ]
One Month to CAT: What we did [ Part II ]
CAT Exam | GD | PI

Siddharth Kapoor
PGP2 IIM Ahmedabad

My work schedule was very demanding and I did not have any time to do a topic-by-topic preparation. So in the last one month, I focussed on test planning. I had taken the CAT, the year before that, and had got 99.01 percentile but had still got only an Indore call because of a low quant score. Quant was my weak area as it used to take me quite some time to solve the problems. So I was determined to improve my chances this time, by planning the test in a better manner.
I took
- 3 SIMCATs
- About 6 tests at home
I identified topics I was strong in. These were geometry and arithmetic, and made sure I attempted all questions on those topics. I also found that I was particularly weak in algebra, and so I decided to leave those questions unattempted. Even during CAT, I did not even read the Algebra questions.

Finally, the allocation of time across the 3 sections. I decided to allocate 50 minutes for Quant, and 35 minutes each to Verbal and Data Interpretation.

As far as Data Interpretation goes, I think the idea is to do a lot of approximations rather than do an accurate calculation. Elimination also is a good technique to arrive at the right answers quickly.

Siddharth or Nokia as he is known at IIMA, was previously with Infosys and is currently on exchange at the Copenhagen Business School.

Dear Siddharth,
when IIM-A decides to give a call letter for GD-PI does it concentrates more on the quantitative/analytical sections of the student or the verbal section? provided the student has comfortably crossed all the cutt-offs.

Hi Sudip,

I dont think anyone can give the correct answer for your question, because the IIMs never reveal their weightages for each section.

But I personally think that there are different cutoffs for people with different backgrounds (work-ex, non-engg etc.)

Secondly, you should focus more on increasing your score in each section. Dont ever make the mistake of trying to maximize in one section and just crossing the cut-off in the rest. You never know where the cut-off is.

All the best.
Cheers,
Siddharth

Hi Lucky,

I may be the wrong person to answer this question as I was myself not disciplined enough to devote the right amount of time. Moreover, I had a very demanding job so I could not be regular with studies.

But I personally feel that it is not the amount of time you put in for preparation, but how smartly you prepare and answer the questions. Nobody can answer all 150 questions in 2 hours. So it essentially boils down to smart planning to maximize your score. As I said earlier in my post, identifying your strong points and weaknesses is a first step.

I would recommend spending about 2 hours everyday taking small section tests or full SIMCATs. But make sure you check where you went wrong, what are your weak areas. There is no point in simply taking more tests and trying to improve, without analyzing your performance.

All the best.
Cheers,
Siddharth
