In general IIMs and other good institutes offer the Post Graduate programmes (PGP), Doctoral Programmes (Fellow Programme in Management) and Executive Development Programmes.

Situated at the outskirts of the historic and culturally rich city of Lucknow, the Indian Institute of Management (IIML), was established in 1984, by the Government of India, as a national level school of excellence in management science.

The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode was set up by the Government of India in collaboration with the State Government of Kerala as the 5th Indian nstitute of Management. Being a part of IIM family of institutions, which have earned worldwide reputation for academic excellence, the Institute strives hard for maintaining international standards in all of its academic activity.

Indian Institute of Management Indore - the youngest sibling in the family of IIMs - has travelled quite a distance, since its inception six years ago. Rubbing shoulders with some well established giants, IIM Indore has now carved a niche for itself in the corporate world and the four batches that have passed out stand testimony to the fact. The essence of management, IIMI believes, lies in managing one's own ambitions and forging ahead consciously.

The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC) was established as the first national institute for Post-Graduate studies and Research in Management by the Government of India in November 1961 in collaboration with Alfred P. Sloan School of Management (MIT), the Government of West Bengal, The Ford Foundation and Indian industry. During its initial years, several prominent faculty formed part of its nucleus, including Paul Samuelson, Jagdish Sheth, J. K. Sengupta, among others.

After 1947, the Government of independent India focused on the development of indigenous science and technology. As a technology base was being created, it became clear that the country needed to simultaneously augment management talent and resources. A response that lead to the creation of the Indian Institutes of Management in the country. The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore was established in 1973.

The Common Admission Test or CAT as it is popularly known, is a multiple choice written exam designed to test a candidate’s ability & aptitude, under a time constraint. Held by the IIMs, CAT has now become the entrance examination for several other leading institutes.

Every year, IIMs select students from among the over 100,000 candidates who apply. The admission process consists of the nationally administered Common Admission Test (CAT), and subsequent rounds of personal interviews and group discussions. The students are selected on the basis of their CAT scores, past academic performance and performance in the interviews and group discussion.
